Dear Supporters of MEER, Welcome to the September edition of the MEER Newsletter. This month MEER's work moves from the field to the policy table. In New Delhi, our India team joined the India Climate Cooling Summit 2026 alongside scientists, policymakers and community leaders. In Africa, field experiments are showing how shade and lower surface temperatures can help vegetation thrive. From China, Dr. Ye Tao shares an update on the engineering and materials program shaping the next generation of passive cooling technologies. In Denmark, international supporter Maarten Bijl represented MEER at the National Climate Summit in Lemvig. And in Washington, DC, the District Department of Transportation has launched a Cool Corridors pilot to test whether reflective pavement can reduce extreme heat in heat-vulnerable neighborhoods. We also welcome Katherine Townsend as MEER's new Global Executive Director. Katherine brings more than 15 years of international leadership experience at the intersection of technology, public policy, transparency and global development, and will help strengthen our partnerships, expand our programs, and support the delivery of our mission worldwide. We also look at the widening gap between the heat Earth absorbs and the heat it radiates back to space — and why that matters for every cooling strategy we pursue.
